Auto Insurance FAQ

  1. I'm moving to another state.

Buy insurance for that particular state. To cancel NY insurance you must return your plates to the DMV. Then give you insurance agent/broker the FS-6T(green receipt from DMV).

  2. (moving within state) I want to change the address on my license and registration. What do I need to do?

Go to the DMV and fill out form MV-232. Take this form and go to the DMV(form provided).

  3. I lost my drivers license/permit. (My drivers license was stolen/permit) What do I do?

Unlike registering for an automobile, you must go in person to renew or apply for a drivers license/permit. A total of at least 6 points is required to apply for a drivers license/permit.

    US passport = 4 points
Permanent Resident Card/Certificate of Citizenship = 3 points each
US major credit card = 2 points
Social Security Card = 2 points
NYS title certificate = 2 points
    Utility bill = 1 point
    Bank statement = 1 point
  4. I am the registered owner (car). Can my friend/parent/sibling get insurance on this vehicle?

The registered owner (title holder) of the vehicle and named insured must be identical according to New York State regulation.

  5. I want to get insurance under my name but someone else will be the driver.

You can but in case of an accident the registered owner of the vehicle will be the main person held responsible, not the driver.
